Introduction
This section of the Wiki is for "How To" information. It will contain useful hints and tips and other things that the Haynes manual for the Renault 5 doesn't tell you. Practical advice from owners of Renault 5s should also appear here.
General
The MK I Renault 5 (1972-84) is fairly easy to maintain (compared with a modern car), but it has quite a few areas to be wary of due to (for example) specific difficulties of carrying out the job, or to special tool requirements, unavailable parts, etc.
What's Easy?
- Changing oil (gearbox and engine oil)
- Coolant change (with certain caveats)
- Changing spark plugs on all models except Gordini versions
What's Slightly Difficult?
- Changing Suspension Balljoints (if they've not been done before and are original to the car)
- Changing Spark Plugs on Gordini Models
- Changing driveshafts
- Engine removal
What's Difficult?
- Changing the Starter Motor
- Releasing and retensioning the front torsion bars
- Overhauling the rear suspension
